Lily pad pond surrounded by lush green trees and forest

🌀 ZigZag Sparks

Fig Lemons

Puddle Bellies

Nobody had ever seen Poggle

notice that path before.

This was peculiar.

Poggle had walked the same trail

approximately nine hundred times.

It knew the crooked fig tree that

kept one lemon behind its ear.

The flat rock with a tiny puddle

in its belly button.

The trail looked suspiciously

like yesterday.

Then, beneath a lily pad, a

crab opened a small suitcase.

"Eyes?"

Poggle stopped.

Inside were six pairs.

One pair was green.

One had brought

its own rubber duck.

Poggle chose the duck ones.

A beetle polished the lenses

with a leaf.

"Try now."

Poggle looked around.

Three crickets were having

a meeting beneath a root.

One had brought charts.

A crack in the old boulder

had become a doorway.

A puddle was hiding

an entire second sky.

Poggle leaned closer.

A cloud underneath waved

with one fluffy elbow.

Then—

Between two ferns was a tiny

trail with blueberry footprints.

"Was that always there?"

"Yep," said the fig tree.

Apparently, it had been

saying that for years.

Poggle followed the little trail.

Roots became trails and one had

a caterpillar zigging back.

A space beneath some bark

had a front porch.

Two snails were playing

badminton with a blueberry.

Poggle took off the eyes.

The snails disappeared.

The doorway became a crack.

Poggle put them back on.

Someone had ordered pizza

for the meeting.

The badminton game was

getting heated.

The chart was upside down.

Ahead was somewhere

Poggle had never been.

The trail had apparently

been keeping secrets.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.
