🌀 ZigZag Sparks
Crab Elevator
Pocket Sand
Nobody had ever seen Scufflie
build a mountain.
Scufflie wasn't building one.
It picked up a grain of sand
wearing hiking boots.
Scufflie named it Gerald.
Scufflie carried Gerald six steps
and put him down.
Then Scufflie went back.
It named the next one Margaret.
Margaret got carried four steps
in the other direction.
A crab watched for a while
while playing a very small piano.
"What are you making?"
"Nothing."
The wind came through
dragging a tiny red wagon.
It loaded approximately
three thousand grains.
Plus Gerald by accident.
"Are you bringing those back?"
The wind pretended not to hear
like a cat sitting on a birthday cake.
By lunchtime, the crab's
front door had moved upstairs.
The crab stared at it like gravity
had misplaced something.
"I don't have an upstairs."
Apparently, it did now.
Scufflie moved another grain.
Then another.
One blew into Scufflie's pocket.
Apparently, it got attached.
The next morning, the dune
was wearing a sign.
MOUNTAIN
Everyone stood back.
"Was that here yesterday?"
The crab looked down
from the third floor.
"Did you make this mountain?"
Scufflie looked at the dune.
Then at the grain in its pocket.
"No."
The wind agreed.
It blew past the sign as the
red wagon did wheelies.
By afternoon, the mountain
had moved six feet to the left.
The sign hadn't.
Scufflie put the grain from its
pocket on the mountain top.
Gerald!
The moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
One grain
Whoops, mountain
