Carnival Sneezes

Wind Samba

Nobody remembers when Aveloo

first appeared.

Some creatures say it drifted

in on a Tuesday.

Others insist the wind laughed

so hard that it accidentally

sneezed it into existence.

Both stories sound about right.

Aveloo loved windy days.

It's when palm trees play carnival.

Nothing stayed where it started.

Leaves zigged.

Clouds zagged.

Even serious-looking trees forgot

they were supposed to stand still.

One afternoon, the wind came

racing over the hill with its pockets

full of whooshes.

Every creature ran for cover.

Except Aveloo.

It took one tiny step forward.

The wind pushed.

Aveloo wobbled.

It giggled.

The wind pushed harder.

Aveloo's ears flapped.

It's feet danced sideways.

It's smile got bigger.

Soon the wind wasn't chasing it

anymore.

They were playing.

When it was over, little Pebblit

peeked out from behind a mushroom.

"Weren't you scared?"

Aveloo looked at the sky,

where one upside-down cloud

was pretending to be a fish.

"I didn't stop the wind," it said.

"I danced with it."

Nobody knew exactly what that meant.

Not even Aveloo.

But everyone smiled anyway.

Because sometimes the biggest

adventures begin with one wobbly step.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.

Wind collects giggles

before it moves on
