Nobody could remember where
the hill began.
The hill couldn't either.
It wandered through ferns,
curled around stones, and
disappeared into a patch
of sunlight offering a
hummingbird a bath.
Brumli arrived carrying
exactly one step.
It set the step down.
The trail accepted it.
So Brumli brought another.
The trail accepted that one too.
This continued for some time.
A hedgehog passed by pushing
an unreasonable opinion.
Nobody stopped it.
The hill grew steeper.
Brumli accidentally became
three inches taller.
The roots stopped pretending
to be obstacles.
The stones stopped pretending
to be separate from the mountain.
Even the wind seemed less
interested in moving than
in watching.
By the middle of the climb,
something had changed.
The ants paused from their
chess game. The squirrels
lowered their binoculars.
It wasn't the hill.
Not the trail.
Not the trees.
Brumli couldn't quite tell what
it was.
Yet every step arrived carrying
more like an idea that forgot
it wasn't finished.
The forest adjusted its eyebrows.
A mushroom nodded once.
That seemed important.
Near the top, the hill finally
remembered where it was
going.
Brumli stepped onto the ridge.
The wind was already there.
Waiting.
The valley stretched below,
with absolutely no sense
of direction.
Three beetles quietly folded
their maps.
Brumli looked back.
The first step still sat quietly
at the bottom of the hill.
It appeared much larger now.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
Hills have excellent manners
They wait for everyone
