Moonbeam Almosts

Pebble Winks

Some creatures collect shiny

pebbles.

Some collect feathers.

Grimble collects almosts.

Almost caught the leaf.

Almost stepped over the puddle.

Almost remembered where it

left Tuesday.

It keeps every almost tucked

safely into its pockets.

It never knows when an almost

might decide to become

something else.

One afternoon, Grimble tripped

over a moonbeam that had not

quite finished being morning.

Grimble apologized.

The moonbeam apologized too.

Neither one thought it was unusual.

If you ever meet a Grimble,

do not wave right away.

Stand quietly.

You will notice the breeze giggling

before Grimble does.

That is how you know you have

found the right one.

It will pat every pocket, looking

wonderfully puzzled.

Then pull out a pinecone,

three acorn hats, yesterday’s

echo, and one perfectly good

almost.

The thing it was looking for

never appears the same way.

Nobody worries.

The almosts caught a laugh and

missed the train.

A pebble winks at it on a walk

home.

Grimble has been looking for it

since last week's soccer game.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.

Every almost leaps a frog
