Raincoat Hopscotch
Pineapple Bicycle
The sky had been practicing
its serious face all morning.
Kombii went out anyway.
It had a hill to climb.
The hill had other plans.
Halfway up, a root stuck out
its foot, like a crooked jack in
the box.
Kombii tripped.
The root apologized.
Kombii bowed.
Nobody seemed particularly
concerned.
Farther along, Kombii climbed
over a log, carried three sticks
for no particular reason,
and hopped across six stones.
The seventh was busy.
A pineapple had parked
its bicycle there.
A worm was checking
the tire pressure.
Kombii went around.
Then the sky opened.
Rain bounced off the leaves.
The trail turned slippery.
A puddle swallowed
three umbrellas.
Nobody saw the irony.
One began rowing.
Kombii opened its pack.
A yo-yo.
Half a coconut.
Half a map.
And a yellow raincoat
with far too many buttons.
Kombii put it on.
The hood fell over its eyes.
Kombii walked into a
bromeliad.
Three frogs fell out.
The bromeliad took it
as a compliment.
Kombii pushed back the hood
and kept going.
Its feet found the stones.
Its legs followed the bends.
A slippery root tried
something ambitious.
Kombii hopped sideways.
Then sideways again.
Soon the whole trail
was playing hopscotch.
The rain kept raining.
Kombii kept wandering.
At the bottom of the hill,
the clouds finally wandered off.
Kombii was muddy.
The raincoat was crooked.
One button was missing.
A strawberry had somehow
ended up in the hood.
Kombii ate it.
A frog floated downstream
on a watermelon slice.
It played the guitar.
It appeared to know
all the words.
The moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
