Gold Bellies
Ground Smiles
Nobody remembers when
the hillside stopped wobbling.
Some say it happened after a
very patient rain.
Others insist Oaken wandered
through carrying a pocket full
of "almost there."
The pebbles seemed to know. The
bees' little bellies of gold told them.
One morning, a young sapling
leaned so far into the wind that
the breeze politely stepped aside.
"Take your time," it whispered.
The roots nodded.
They'd been expecting this.
Oaken wandered past without
saying a word.
It paused beside a stone that
had been wondering whether it
belonged.
It borrowed a mossy log that had
woken up with bedhead.
The stone stopped wondering.
A beetle marched across it
like it had somewhere terribly
important to be.
It probably did.
The moss scooted over to make
room.
It usually does.
Nearby, a mushroom was holding
the forest together with absolutely
no visible effort.
Nobody mentioned it.
The mushroom didn't seem
interested in discussing it.
By afternoon, the hillside felt
wonderfully certain of itself.
A sleepy spider tightened one
corner of the afternoon.
The raccoons had been
using it as a hammock.
The shadows settled in.
Even the creek remembered
exactly where it was going.
Oaken had already wandered on.
You can usually tell.
The ground smiles with its feet.
The moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on Thursdays.
Pebbles are
practicing mountains
