Oyster Shoes

Frog Elbows

Nobody noticed Pebblet arrive.

Nobody ever did.

It was too small.

One morning, a creature stopped

in the middle of the trail.

Something was in its shoe,

like a pickle in a piano.

Pebblet.

The creature shook its shoe.

Pebblet rolled out.

It put the shoe back on.

Three steps later—

Pebblet.

Other shoe.

Apparently, there were vacancies.

Nobody investigated.

Farther along, Pebblet appeared

between two flamingo knees.

Then under a frog's left elbow.

Then behind a starfish's ear.

At lunch, somebody found Pebblet

in the soup.

The spoon looked delighted.

Pebblet rolled on.

By afternoon, three Pebblets

had appeared in a pocket.

Nobody remembered collecting them.

One was wearing a tiny necktie.

Things were getting grainy.

Near the water, Pebblet rolled

toward an oyster.

The oyster opened.

Pebblet disappeared inside.

"Should we get it out?"

The oyster closed.

Apparently not.

Everyone wandered off.

There were other things to notice.

A cloud had gotten stuck in a tree.

Two crabs were sharing a

cinnamon roll.

Tuesday had misplaced a button.

Later, they passed the oyster again.

Something shiny peeked from

inside.

The oyster looked rather pleased.

Nobody asked.

Pebblet was nowhere to be seen.

Until—

Someone stopped.

Took off a shoe.

Shook it.

Pebblet rolled out.

Maybe the same Pebblet.

Maybe not.

The trail continued.

So did everybody else.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.
