Clover Scoot
Muddy Hat
The rain had left the trail shiny.
Suspiciously shiny, enough
to have an alibi.
Pippit looked down.
A patch of mud smiled like a
banana with car keys.
Pippit knew better.
Farther ahead, the other
creatures were choosing
where to step.
One picked a patch of mud with
a daisy stuck behind its ear.
Slip.
Slide.
Clover.
The clover caught it.
Mostly.
Another stepped near a rock
reading a very small newspaper.
The rock coughed.
Too late.
Down the hill it went.
It returned wearing somebody
else's hat.
Nobody recognized the hat.
Pippit stepped onto a patch
of clover.
The clover sighed happily.
Apparently, it had an itchy back.
Ahhhhh.
Next came a root.
It stuck three tiny toes out of
the mud.
The middle one had a
mustache.
Pippit stepped there.
Then on a rock.
Then clover.
Then root.
A mushroom nearby kept score
like a pigeon playing bingo.
Nobody had asked it to.
Behind Pippit—
Slip.
Whoop.
Clover.
The clover was getting quite
good at this.
Pippit continued.
Clover.
Root.
Rock.
A particularly innocent-looking
patch of mud waited ahead.
Pippit narrowed its eyes.
The mud whistled.
Pippit hopped onto what had
sprouted.
A ladybug raised the landing
flag.
The clover held like a lobster
with a library card.
Around the bend, the trail
disappeared.
Pippit couldn't see what came
next.
A little green leaf poked through
the mud.
Then another, with red-and-white
striped pom-poms.
Very encouraging.
Pippit stepped there.
One foot landed.
The other figured itself out later.
The moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
