Sky Pebbles
Zipper Moons
Some creatures gather seashells.
Some gather shiny pebbles.
Skymble collects whatever the
rain remembers.
Today, a curled leaf gathered a
little water and found itself
unexpectedly carrying the
weather.
By breakfast, it was carrying three
clouds, half a pine tree, a sloth,
and an entire piece of sky.
The leaf seemed perfectly
comfortable about this.
The sky did too.
A dragonfly stopped by for a closer
look.
It found another dragonfly looking
back.
They nodded politely.
Neither one asked any questions.
The clouds joined in too.
The rain knew its part.
The sky did too.
The whole thing zipped together
the way it always does, while
somewhere, a chipmunk
misplaced an accordion.
By lunchtime, the wind tipped the
leaf.
The clouds drifted away.
The pine tree returned to being
a pine tree.
The sky spilled back into the sky.
Nobody seemed concerned.
There was plenty more where it
came from.
Later that afternoon, a hollow in
a piece of bark filled with rainwater.
A cedar tree moved in.
Then a cloud.
Then the moon, who arrived early
after having brunch with the tide.
The bark made room for everyone.
It was larger on the inside.
Skymble seemed pleased.
You can usually tell.
The world starts appearing in
places it shouldn't fit.
And somehow fits perfectly,
like a capybara walking
through a grocery store.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
The sky plays the
accordion in dew drops
