🌀 ZigZag Tricks
Sun Confetti
Star Puddles
The beach had been collecting
sunlight all morning.
Nobody knew where it planned
to keep it. Maybe in a treasure
box.
The waves seemed involved.
Each one arrived carrying
an armful of sparkles, ready
for a New Years Party.
Each one left the party
carrying more.
This was considered excellent
beach behavior.
Solara appeared sometime
between the seventh shimmer
and the first seagull flap.
The timing remains disputed.
A patch of ocean unfolded into
a field of moving stars like neon
Trix in a bowl of milk.
The waves were pleased. The
stars seemed happy to help.
Farther down the shore, a
sandpiper mistook a reflection
for tomorrow.
The reflection waved.
The sandpiper waved back.
Several sunbeams gathered near
a tide pool and formed a choir.
Nobody understood the lyrics.
The tide pool glowed anyway.
A crab became briefly convinced
it was walking through the night sky.
The sky declined to comment.
By midday, the beach had
multiplied the sunlight so many
times that nobody could remember
which sparkle arrived first.
The waves didn't seem concerned.
They simply kept passing the light
to one another.
Like a secret.
Like a game.
Like something the ocean had
been practicing for years.
Near sunset, the last shimmer
drifted toward the horizon to find
out who turns the stars on.
Solara followed it.
The beach grinned behind them.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
Horizons are always there
