Moss Pockets
Tembrel arrived sometime
between a raindrop and
a woodpecker.
Nobody knew when that was.
Tembrel did.
Three woodpecker knocks
past pomegranate.
Almost fern wiggle.
Plenty of time.
A leaf fell.
Leaf-thirty.
Tembrel wandered on.
By the creek, two dragonflies
crossed in opposite directions.
Quarter past blueberry.
The blueberry disagreed.
Farther ahead, the other
creatures were waiting.
"What time is it?"
Tembrel looked around.
A snail was still crossing
Tuesday.
The moss hadn't put
its pockets on.
"Almost moss-pocket."
A fern wiggled.
Once.
Twice.
Nearly lunch.
Right on schedule,
a woodpecker knocked
seven times.
A porcupine produced
a waffle and one ravioli.
Apparently, lunch.
Near the bend, a dinosaur
sat beneath a tree.
It had been there since
quarter past fern.
Possibly longer.
Dinosaurs were terrible
with remembering.
Tembrel sat beside it.
A raindrop landed
on a stone.
A nearby beetle
lost its train of thought.
Plink.
Another followed.
A leaf twirled down.
The woodpecker knocked.
Then the fireflies appeared.
Firefly o'clock.
Everyone stopped.
The whole forest blinked.
Tembrel stayed until
three fireflies past cricket.
Then wandered home.
The moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
Now goes barefoot
