Tiptoe Elephants
Friendly Prickles
The ants agreed the prickliest
parts of the trail seemed a little friendlier.
This morning, the path wandered
into a patch of thorns.
They weren't unfriendly.
They were simply very good
at being thorns. Rhinoceroses
have never apologized for their
noses.
The other creatures stopped.
The thorns nodded.
Nobody seemed in a hurry.
Thistlet wandered closer.
Not because it wanted to be
scratched.
It wondered what the thorns
were protecting.
Perhaps that's where sunrays sleep.
It found a tiny opening no wider
than a curious squirrel.
Just enough room for one careful
step.
Then another.
The thorns leaned aside.
Only a little.
Logs understand this.
That was all that was needed.
On the other side, the trail
stretched, yawned, and
carried on as though nothing
unusual had happened.
The other creatures followed.
One by one. Like the tiptoes of
a wandering elephant.
Not because the thorns had
changed.
Because they had noticed the
little opening.
After that, whenever the trail
looked prickly, nobody hurried
to turn around.
They wondered what might be
growing just beyond it.
A blackberry smiled.
The breeze thanked the brambles.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
Sunrays know exactly
where to sleep
