Hiking trail lined with red poppies in Cinque Terre National Park near Manarola, Italy

🌀 ZigZag Tricks

Pebble Hiccups

Poppy Shoelaces

Umberoo arrived just after

the rain clouds dropped

their last marble.

The trail was still wet.

So were most of the trees.

Nobody seemed embarrassed.

Umberoo stepped onto the

sand.

Squish.

It stepped again.

Squish.

A pebble rolled beneath its foot

and joined a picnic.

Umberoo chilled.

The pebble rolled back.

Apparently, it had forgotten

something.

Umberoo continued.

Step.

Pause.

Squish.

Nearby, three poppies were

tying each other's shoelaces.

None of them wore shoes.

Umberoo watched for a while.

This seemed complicated.

Farther along, the sand

became pebbles waiting

for a bus.

The pebbles became roots.

The roots became a patch

of mud wearing a bow tie.

Umberoo's feet changed

their minds each time.

A little sideways here.

A small hop there.

One particularly ambitious

step landed backward.

Umberoo kept it.

Overhead, some birds called.

Three acorns picked up.

They appeared to be

ordering lunch.

Umberoo followed the trail

into a patch of sunlight.

The sunlight tickled its toes.

Its toes declined to comment.

By afternoon, the trail had

changed six times.

Umberoo had changed with it.

Neither kept score.

A pebble hiccuped.

Umberoo stopped.

The pebble looked surprised.

A pinecone dropped its spoon.

Umberoo stepped forward.

The trail wiggled beneath it.

Its feet wiggled back.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.

Ground changes its mind

Feet keep dancing
