Turnip Belts
Domino Horizons
One afternoon, the trail ended.
At least that's what the sign said.
The sign seemed confident.
The trail seemed less certain.
Wayloo stopped.
The sign pointed toward the ending.
The breeze pointed somewhere
else.
A butterfly ignored both.
It was trying to catch
a wandering Tuesday.
Nearby, a fence stretched across
the path practicing a plank pose.
Its posture was impeccable.
The fence appeared pleased
with itself, like a turnip wearing
a championship belt.
A leaf drifted over it.
Three dandelion seeds wandered
through without showing
identification.
The fence seemed untroubled.
Farther ahead, a horizon rested
beyond the trees.
At least it appeared to.
Wayloo looked closely.
The horizon had already moved
somewhere else.
Wayloo followed.
The horizon seemed delighted
with the arrangement.
A trailhead wandered past,
looking for its trail.
Wayloo pointed toward a hill.
The trailhead thanked it
and continued east.
Farther ahead, the trail curved
around a bend.
The bend curved around
another bend.
Both seemed perfectly
comfortable with this.
The horizon remained exactly
one horizon away.
Like ants carrying dominoes
in a parade.
Everyone considered this
excellent progress.
The fence appeared to have
taken up wildflowers.
The wildflowers seemed amused.
By dinnertime, Wayloo had found
a domino parade, two horizons,
and a bend leading somewhere else.
The sign kept pointing toward
the ending.
The trail kept wandering off.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
