Stone Giggles
Moon Circles
Stepping stones seem to giggle
just before the breeze finds its
footing.
This morning, five stepping
stones waited beside a little
stream.
The first was feeling especially
wobbly.
It had turned circles with the moon
last night.
The second was trying very hard
to look important.
It was pondering the dewdrops.
The third had become wonderfully
distracted by a dragonfly.
The dragonfly didn't mind.
The fourth simply enjoyed
being stepped on.
The fifth couldn't stop smiling.
Nobody knew why.
Woblett stepped onto the
first stone.
It wobbled.
So did Woblett.
The creek laughed around
the stones.
Otters would have approved.
The breeze waited politely.
Woblett stood still for just a
moment. The sky was open
for breakfast.
Not because Woblett was afraid.
It was listening.
The next step felt different.
Then another.
Soon the wobbling began
sounding remarkably like tap
dancing.
The stepping stones seemed
delighted.
The creek agreed.
Creeks usually know when to cheer.
By the time everyone reached
the other side, the stones looked
wonderfully pleased with themselves.
A butterfly nodded and clapped.
Mountain goats understand this.
If your feet ever arrive a tiny
moment before the rest of you...
Woblett has probably wandered
through.
The trail never mentions it.
It smiles anyway.
And the moon smiled upside down.
The earth whispered, "Wheee."
And there are popsicles on
Thursdays.
